Maria Friberg employs domestic objects to investigate concepts of masculinity, power and man’s relationship to nature. In what ways are we influenced by the continuity of values and traditions handed down through generations such as social structures and norms? Rather than reinforcing conventional ideas of authority, Friberg’s figures frequently appear reflective, uncertain, and emotionally exposed. Her work looks both outwards, to the challenges in contemporary society, and inwards, to a meditative state of mind.Drawing inspiration from classical painting, Friberg works directly with scenes, light, and objects, without digital manipulation – no Photoshop, no AI. Most of the work in the book were created during her stay at The Bergman Estate on Fårö, Ingmar Bergman’s former home on Gotland, one of these photographs features a vintage book caught in the surf of a seascape.
