Ester Almqvist (1869-1934) lived through times of great change. The circa 2,300 Almqvist works that are part of Malmö Konstmuseum's collection range from evocative turn of the century landscapes to portraits of women and colourful industrial scenes. Through the work of Ester Almqvist we encounter the breakthrough of Modern art and the story of the women's networks that flourished in the early 1900s.
“Can you see that I live as though in two worlds: one is with my dear friends, artists and sun people - that existence always carries on where we left off, even if years have passed. And the other life: it is heavy and prehistoric, I would say, Swedish and rustic.” – Ester Almqvist.
