ART AND THEORY Q&A WITH ARTIST ULLA WIGGEN
What’s your favourite museum and why?
I’d like to answer that I love art. Art reached my inner self long before words did. I’ve traveled to many cities only to visit art museums and to get the opportunity to see exhibitions and collections. I don’t have a favourite museum but there are many I’d like to revisit if there was time for it.
Is there a specific experience of art that has been memorable for you to this day?
For me, it’s many times a strong experience to see an artwork in reality that I’ve previously only seen as a picture. For example I remember Michelangelo’s Pietà, which I first saw almost fifty years ago. I was fascinated by its beauty without thinking about what it represents.
Pietà, Michelangelo, 1499
What do you like to do when you’re not painting?
To exercise, visit an exhibition or go for a walk with a friend to get a glimpse of another person’s existence as a contrast to the sedentary seclusion of painting.
What’s your favourite reading spot?
Nowadays I could almost express it like Andy Warhol ”I never read, I just look at pictures”. I read slow and on recommendation – preferably in bed at the end of the day if I’m not too tired or busy doing something that requires my attention. La Biennale di Venezia is a good example of such a thing.
